A. You should get one amp which drives your speakers as well as your woofers. There are some amps which are designed for this. Another option is to get a bass module with the amp built in. Either way you're going to want an amp for your mids and highs. Your local installer should be able to make some good suggestions. My advice is to bring some of your favorite music with you to help judge the sound quality of the different speakers. I have Polks in my Honda.

How can i hook up computer speakers to stereo speakers?
Q. I just bought two decent stereo speakers and hooked them up to my computer. It sounds great, but i want more sound so im wondering if i could hook up my computer speakers to my new ones. The computer speakers are normal speakers and have just the one cord to plug into the computer, where as the new speakers have the same cord except to plug them into the speaker it uses a red and white plug in thingers. There are 2 slots each of these red and white inputs, so im thinking it has something to do with that. Any help? This question probably sounds really confusing, but any ideas would be appreciated.

A. yea use something called a duel port, or headphone splitter, what they do is instead of there being 1 port 4 ur headphones, u then plug the duel port in and there is now 2, so plug in both speakers and have some fun loud music. Note: If 1 of the ports on the duel port, then you will only get sound out of 1 side of the speakers, so have both speakers plugged in at the same time. But if u want only one set then get rid of the duel port altogether, because as i said, you will get sound out of only 1 side of the speakers.

How can I connect four speakers to a mini system cheaply and safely?
Q. I want to use a cheap CD system to provide background music for a room. I don't need fantastic sound and would prefer not to have to buy amps etc. My plan is to install four car speakers into the ceiling of the room and connect two to each output on the mini system. The mini system has speakers with 6 ohm impedance. Can I wire two 12 ohm car speakers in parallel for each output without blowing the output amps of the system? An alternative would be to wire two 3 ohm speakers in series to each output, but I think the first speaker in the circuit would draw more power and hence the volume levels would be mis-matched. If I can't find speakers of the required impedance rating, can I add resistors in parallel to them to achieve an overall… [cont.]

A. OK you got it...But series doesn't make one speaker noticabley quiter than the other. Parrellel = 1/2 impedence Series =X 2 You can have higher than 6 ohms with no damage to your speakers or amp (in your mini system) but if you have less than 6 ohms you will blow your output transistors in the output stage of your amp. Good luck it sounds like you won't need it!

How to connect Bose Wave to external speakers with a speaker cable?
Q. I would like to connect my Bose Wave Music System to external speakers, with a speaker cable. The Bose Wave has a headphone connector, and no rca inputs, or speaker cable ports. Is there any way to get it connected to my external speakers, through a speaker cable, without buying a receiver?
Asked by Tech Dude - Sun Jun 22 18:26:57 2008 - - 1 Answers - 1 Comments
A. You could go to Radio Shack and see if you could find some type of splitter that would plug into the headphone jack that had 2 leads on. I know this doesn't make a lot of sence but what I'm trying to say is the one end would puug into where you would plug in the headphones and that the other end would have 2 wires that you could splice your speaker wire to.

What happens when stereo speakers short circuit?
Q. I have a couple of Polk Audio bookshelf speakers that I'm trying to use with a new Onkyo TX-SR504 receiver. When I try to play a DVD or a CD after a while the speakers cut out. Onkyo tech support said either my speaker wire or my speakers have a short. After trying new speaker wire, and connecting the speakers individually, the sound still cuts off after anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes. So, I guess the speakers have shorted... I'm not very savvy with electricity or electronics. Just curious how the speakers may have short-circuited so I can avoid it in the future. Also just seeking a second opinion. Does it sound like my speakers short-circuited? Onkyo tech support said if the receiver was the problem, I wouldn't hear any sound at all.… [cont.]

A. Perhaps someone can correct me if I am wrong but although it is common to experience a short circuit in speaker wire it is not very common to have a short circuit in the speakers themselves. A short circuit occurs in an audio system when positive and negative charges meet, interrupting the way the current was supposed to flow and causing an undesirably high current flow from the amplifier. This usually happens when the positive and negative wires touch at either speaker or amplifier terminals. It is possible for there to be a short circuit inside of a speaker but if this is the problem it can be repaired. I would check to make sure you have no exposed positive and negative wires touching (not even a little!). The Onkyo tech should have… [cont.]

How do I set up a speaker system to output the same audio on 5+ speakers throughout a showroom?
Q. I have a computer providing the audio output, and already have a variety of speakers around the showroom. Am wondering how to get the same audio to play in all the speakers? Half the room's speakers already have wire running to the computer area - the other half don't. Is there a way to set up a receiver by the computer, and then have another wireless receiver set up on the other side of the showroom to connect the other speakers to? Thanks in advance for any help!

A. that's easy just get a stereo amplifier - around 100w per channel and a 3.5mm stereo plug to 2 x rca plugs lead and plug the 3.5mm plug into your computer and the 2 x rca plugs into the amplifiers aux or cd input then connect the speakers on one side of the showroom to the amplifiers left speaker output and connect the other speakers on the other side to the amplifiers right speaker output then turn the amplifier on and select cd or aux input then turn up the volume on the amplifier

How can i make my speakers wireless?
Q. I have four speakers in my basement. However i would like to move them around without dragging all the wires with me. I have a tv set up in one part of my basement that is equipped with a Yamaha receiver that connects 4 different speakers. But i want to every now and then move those speakers over to the big part of the basement (without moving the receiver and wires with me) for when i have parties and what not. I would still be able to control the receiver with remote from the distance. I am hoping there is something i could connect to the speakers. So, what can i do?

What kind of speakers can I buy for a small screen hdtv with digital audio output?
Q. I just bought a 26" sharp lcd hdtv. The picture is fine, but the speakers are very disappointing. the tv does have a digital output audio. what kind of external speakers/woofers are compatible with this tv? what components will be needed? i reckon a conventional computer speaker wouldn't work.

A. In order to use the digital audio output, you'll need a Dolby receiver, which means you'll need a full-blown Home Theater kit. You can get these relatively cheaply these days, but you get what you pay for. If the TV is a small one for a bedroom, you might do better to take the ANALOG audio output and run that into a set of PC speakers with subwoofer.

A. How is your cable or disc network connected to the tv. If it is connected to the tv you need to connect an optical cable from the tv to the Onkyo HT. When you want to hear the tv sound through the speakers you will need to select the source you connected the optical cable to the Onkyo system. Or you can connect the cable or disc network directly to the Onkyo versus to the tv. Hope this will help you out.

A. Four - two in the front doors, and two in the back parcel shelf. If you have the Bose system, they are powered speakers - each speaker has its own amp, so you can't just switch them with regular speakers. Richard

What computer speakers perform great with games and music?
Q. I have been looking online for a while now but if one speaker is great for music, it sucks for gaming, or vice-versa. Is there a good pair of speakers running for $90 and under that would work great with both?

How to hook up outdoor speakers to my surround sound system?
Q. I recently added outdoor speakers to my surround sound system. I have a Samsung system, but it doesn't appear to have a two-channel system. Any suggestions on how to switch between my indoor and outdoor speakers? I only want my outdoor speakers to work when I am listening to the radio or cd. I don't wany my neighbors listening to the movies or tv stations that I am watching.

A. You may have to try a speaker selection box to switch between your front speakers and your outdoors. The box is inexpensive and splits the one speaker output between your indoor and outdoor speakers with a button control. Try an electronics stores or a big AV retailer... Hope this helps...
