How to get my grandfather to stop smoking?
Q. My grandfather has been smoking for a really long time and he is going to turn 65 years old. But my grandfather, grandmother,u ncle, auntie, and my their son which is my baby cousin all live in a freaking huge house in Toronto and my baby cousin is going to turn 2 years old and the second hand smoking from my grandfather could go into my baby cousin's mouth. I just cover my mouth with a pillow whenever he smokes a cigarette.

Did you grow up with a GRANDFATHER CLOCK in your home?
Q. A couple of things here. First of all, just wondering if anyone knows the best brand of Grandfather Clock (Sligh, Ridgeway, Howard Miller, etc.)--if they're all just the same, if you're getting a used one. Also, any opinions on the timing of the chiming? (Umm . . .) In other words, is it better to have them chime every 15 minutes or every half hour? Any advantages or disadvantages for either? We know we want one that shuts off at night. Thanks!
Asked by Banoland - Thu Jul 3 09:41:25 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Most don't shut off at night. If it's a used one you're looking at just speak with the previous owner about the clocks characteristics. I grew up with one and have my own now. I love the sound, it rings in the hours and chimes once for the minute. Anything more than that I think would get irritating. As for shutting off at night, as long as it's not in your bedroom you'll get use to the sound and sleep right through it. If you should become awake, it'll let you know the time without even turning over.

What does this mean: Grandfather believed a well-rooted tree was the color of money?
Q. In the story, "The Grandfather," what does: "Grandfather believed a well-rooted tree was the color of money," mean. A well rooted tree was the color of money, what does that mean?
Asked by Geegee A - Mon Apr 12 18:04:27 2010 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I am pretty sure that it means a tree that is well rooted will bare fruit, which can be sold for money. That's in a literal sense but the idea can be added to anything pretty much. Hence "a well rooted tree is the color of money"

How do I go about finding my grandfathers fathers details as grandfather adopted?
Q. If I have my grandfathers details who was born in southern Ireland anyone know best way to trace my great grandfather, would love to find out for my mother. Help would be appreciated.approx dates around 1930's- thank you for your answers, so helpful and yes is abit of a mystery and would love to find out the history as think is some foreign blood there somewhere.
Asked by Slainte xx - Wed Apr 9 16:35:12 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. As you have your grandfathers details, you will need a copy of his birth certificate to find his father`s name. Southern Ireland indexes are available at most LDS Family History Centres. Look in your local phone book under Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Once you have the reference you will need to order birth certificate from Registrar General, Joyce House, 8-11 Lombard Street, Dublin 2, Ireland. The cost of a certificate is 10 Euros. As he was adopted, it is quite possible that his father was not recorded on the birth certificate. If this is the case, he will be difficult to trace, as he may not have been known.

How much does it cost to service a grandfather clock?
Q. I inherited a grandfather clock from my grandmother. It hasn't been serviced in about 5-10 years. How much would it cost for it to be cleaned and all that and to have the weights balanced? Also, if you know any particular clock shops, leave the name and address and/or a website. Thank you!
Asked by CSN1153 - Tue Jul 21 22:39:39 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. To get the names, you need to tell us where you live. As for servicing it, it would depend on the size and age. Need to get some more specific details from you. If you don't want that info, just call a clock shop and ask them. If it's really large, there are shops out there that will come to you as well.

How do I guess year of birth of my 5th generation great grandfather?
Q. I was born in 1952. My father was born in 1919. I do not know about my grandfather's birth date and so his father and grandfather. Can any body help?
Asked by Langka putra - Mon Jun 29 11:39:04 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. A familial generation is defined as the average time between a mother's first offspring and her daughter's first offspring. The generation length is 25.2 years in the United States as of 2007 and 27.4 years in the United Kingdom as of 2004. OK, so between your dad & you it was 33 years, but on average, say 26. Generations prior to our father's (I was also born in 52) were shorter, I think. They married younger, and and had kids earlier. So, use 25 years each. If you are trying to be more specific, see if you can find where they entered the country, and see if records are kept there -like Ellis Island.

How to know if your great grandfather fought in ww1?
Q. Hi, I'm wondering if there is any way to find out if my great grandfather fought in ww1? My grandfather fought in ww2 and was born in 1911. At that time my family would have been wealthy land owners in india, and he would have probably been around 35 years old, but i don't live there so is there any way to find out?
Asked by Roger - Fri May 14 04:23:09 2010 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Best way is to ask your family. Your grandfather would know, and he might have said something to your other family members. Other than that, not much. Sorry and good luck.

How can I clean up my pool without my grandfather knowing?
Q. I live with my grandparents and we have a pool in our backyard. My grandfather always took care of it, but this year he's sick and not really doing a good job. He is very stubborn and independent and he won't accept my help to clean it! Are there any chemicals I can put into it that would clear up the water? He also hardly ever runs the filter. Is there anything I can do?
Asked by jaime - Thu Jul 10 09:14:31 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. This is a tough call. It sounds like your grandfather might take it personally if you try to help him, since many elderly people see being helped as a sign of their infirmity. Maybe you could tell him you really WANT to clean the pool yourself, that you need to learn to do these things for when you have your own pool, and ask him for advice? If he feels he's still involved in all of this you might not only end up with a clean pool but a happier grandfather. However, if you try this and he just gets more upset, you're going to have to forget about it. The pool does still belong to him, after all.

How do I make a good toast for my dead grandfather?
Q. Tomorrow will be the 40th day since my grandfather has died, and according to russian tradition, that day is the day when his soul comes back to earth, and then leave forever. I need to make a toast, seeing as I am his grandson, but my head is empty on what I should say. I dont want to embarass myself, so does anyone have an idea on what I could say?
Asked by Emil s. - Wed Jul 15 19:14:55 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. What toasts have you heard in your family to other dead relatives? Someone in your family relationship will probably have some idea on what to say. If not, then just make up a toast. Say that you are thinking about your grandfather, how he made an impression on your life, you will never forget him, say something you remember about him - like something he said or did. You will not embarrass yourself. Don't worry. Just say how you honestly feel about him right now. Good luck.

Grandfather clock does not work after moving it?
Q. After moving my grandfather clock does not work after moving it from Las Vegas to New York. I put all weights back to where there were originally. It has 3 weights, but the middle one does not drop now and the pendulum stops after just 20 minutes. The clock is a Howard Miller. Thanks for your help
Asked by Dave F - Sat Nov 24 18:04:48 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The clock is off-beat most likely. The tics and tocs need to be exactly spaced at equal intervals. Remove the pendulum and press it one direction, when it stops moving (as far as it will swing one way) press it a tad farther. Try and run it again, listen to the beat again. If you are going the wrong direction, press it to the opposite side plus a tad more. continue this process untill the tics and tocs are equally spaced (timed) --- Otherwise call an expert.

I am considering publishing my grandfather's war diaries, or writing a biography- how should I start?
Q. My grandfather had a distinguished career during WW2 and his diaries (with personal entries from the King, Heile Sellasie and Montgomery) are excellent reading. He was also M.O.D. I would love other people to be able to read them- what is involved in publishing them as diaries, or making a wartime biography out of them? Thanks! My apologies, I meant M.I.D, not M.O.D.
Asked by Rover - Tue Aug 19 05:59:02 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It's only my opinion but I would start with the diaries and sort of copy and edit them as you go. You will probably be re-writing anyway so I think that would be a good way to start. You could even do a teaser / serialisation kind of thing - if you want to do it with a website I could help you with that, just send me a message. Sounds very interesting, good luck. R!

Q. I need a short verse or something to write on a flower a card to put on my grandfather coffin. any ideas?
Asked by Aimee - Sun Jan 18 12:01:30 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Just put what you truly genuinely feel. Whether you put a saying he always said to you or something you guys did together or just a little note about your feelings on him being in your life. You can't go wrong, it's all up to you. Don't write things people tell you too. Just say what you feel is right. Take some time and sit and think about it alone, it will come to you. And trust me, he won't care what you say really, just that you cared enough to say it. I'm sorry about your grandpa, and I hope you're doing alright.

What to write in a sympathy card to my grandfather?
Q. My grandma died about 20 years ago, and since then my grandfather has had a "lady friend" who was also a widow. She had been sick for a long time, and then she died last week. Today was the memorial service, but I was unable to attend because I live out of state. I want to write a sympathy card to my grandfather. We are not especially close, but I know he must be hurting to have lost both of the women he spent his life with. What should I say?

A. Dear Grandpa, I am so sorry to hear about "Lady Friend's Name" and am sorry I wasn't able to be there in person, but I am thinking about you. Love, xxx i think, too, that you should call him every so often, on the weekend if you have free weekend minutes. You don't need to have long conversations, but just let him know you hope he is doing ok.

But, I know that I have legal rights on the property (a farm) which was purchased by my grandfather and later transferred in the name of his sons (my father is one of them) after his death. I do not even know, how much land did my grandfather have? I want to have the copy of the same. I live in Mumbai but the the said farm is in my hometown. How do I go about it?

A. if you know the Survey Number and address of the property, you can apply for encumbrance certificate from the Registrar office concerned. That encumbrance certificate will have the details of transactions done on the property with the document number and date. you can apply a certified copy of the document quoting the Document number and date, to the registrar by paying the required fees for same. Registrar will give in two to three working days the copy of the document.
