A. I think a gift basket would be great. Pick a theme, like kitchen utensils, arrange them in a nice pitcher or a large bowl. Bathroom: soaps, washcloths, toothpaste, plunger, etc in a small trash can. Mostly, think of all the little things you forget about when you first move into your own place. Cleaning supplies, nails, spices! The personal touch will make it sweet, and the relief when they realize they don't have to run out to wal-mart for that little extra for dinner will make a great memory. Q. I want to give 3 of my teachers end of the year gifts and was thinking gift cards (around 10 bucks each) and a nice handwritten thank you note. A. Get gift cards that remind you of the teacher. Get them something you know they would like and is fun. Perhaps you could get them Visa gift cards - that way they can spend it in any store. I believe you can pick those up at stores like Wal Mart. That's so sweet of you to do. Definitely include the handwritten note - I would cherish that if a student gave me one :-)

A. I am a teacher and by far the nicest suggestion is a book with notes from the kids. You have certainly given wonderful presents in the past too. But no one can ever give the gift of real appreciation. I have many mugs, t-shirts, plants etc but the gifts I treasure and that I take out when I need a lift are notes from my students and a well worn little book given to me by a class over 22 years ago. I love all my gifts and feel grateful that people have taken time to select and give a gift when we are all so busy so I am sure anything would be fine...but a little book of notes from the kids...a priceless jewel!

A. Newborns - diapers diapers and more diapers. I know it's boring, but it is VERY useful. Diapers are expensive and babies go through a TON. They are also ok if you get the wrong size, because they are very easily exchangable with or without a receipt. Fantastic gift for toddlers - they have music CD's and books that you can order personalized with the children's name. Like my daughter (2 years old) has an Elmo CD that says "Come on Mia, let's play a game!" and she just LOVES it. She will listen to it over and over again... If you want to seem really thoughtful and supportive, get her a membership to a social club of her interest, or dance class or gym or toastmaster's, to help her make new friends and settle in to her new location. Or you could make contact with a local volunteer group and set her up to meet them (if she likes to volunteer). What is the difference between a Deed of Gift and a Gift with Reservation?
Q. This question relates to UK Law:- I have an elderly widowed relative who has died in the last few months. He signed over his farm ten years ago to his son to avoid Inheritance Tax by signing a Deed of Gift. I have since been told that as the elderly relative remained living in the farmhouse rent free then this is a Gift with Reservation and not a Deed of Gift as the elderly gentleman retained a benefit from the property by living in it. My question is this:- does the fact the elderly gentleman remained rent free in the house make the Deed of Gift Void and if so then does disposal of all the assets (e.g. farm) revert back to the original Will. I would be most grateful for some help on this please.

A. As you rightly say, your elderly relative signed a 'Deed of Gift' to try to avoid paying inheritance tax. This works as a gift to another individual is exempt from inheritance tax AS LONG as the indivudal who makes the gift survives seven years. However this was a 'Gift with a Reservation of Benefit'. As such, if your elderly relative was still living in it at the time of death, it is treated as if it was still owned (s102(3) Finance Act 1986) by him but only for tax purposes. A gift with reservation of benefit has consequences for the amount of inheritance tax your elderly relative's estate will pay on the house, but NOT for the ownership of the house. A. Definately do the homemade idea. Cash talks...and since a good portion of tattoo artists can be flaky its best to have it on hand and not a gift certificate that has already been paid for. Think about it. The artist has already been paid if you have a gift certificate...it would make much more sense to him to book someone when he can still make money. Sounds bad and I am sure all artists are different but its how it works most of the time. In regards to how much $$$ to give as a gift, it totally depends upon the tattoo. As little as $50-75 to cover a shop minimum...or A couple grand for sleeve. Figure $100-150 an hour for a good artist.
