What are gift ideas to give for a wedding?
Q. My friend is getting married soon and I plan on gifting her for her bridal shower and wedding. I spent around 70 for her bridal gift. What should I give for the wedding. I am hoping to not spend as much for that gift. So that mean I want to avoid giving her cash or a gift card. Any ideas for affordable gifts?

A. I think a gift basket would be great. Pick a theme, like kitchen utensils, arrange them in a nice pitcher or a large bowl. Bathroom: soaps, washcloths, toothpaste, plunger, etc in a small trash can. Mostly, think of all the little things you forget about when you first move into your own place. Cleaning supplies, nails, spices! The personal touch will make it sweet, and the relief when they realize they don't have to run out to wal-mart for that little extra for dinner will make a great memory. This is also an idea I came up with on my own, thinking it would be really cute if someone did it for my own wedding gift. If the couple's last name is also a brand name, buy a basket and fill it with those things. My soon to be name is Hines. So,… [cont.]

What gift card could a teacher make use of the most?
Q. I want to give 3 of my teachers end of the year gifts and was thinking gift cards (around 10 bucks each) and a nice handwritten thank you note. Before I go out and get some gift cards I wanted to get an idea about what teachers would appreciate or make use of the most. Should I go with fun stuff like their favorite restraunt, coffee place or bath and body works, or should I go with Barnes and Noble or Staples kind of stuff? Thanks!
Asked by Alice - Fri May 15 19:55:33 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Get gift cards that remind you of the teacher. Get them something you know they would like and is fun. Perhaps you could get them Visa gift cards - that way they can spend it in any store. I believe you can pick those up at stores like Wal Mart. That's so sweet of you to do. Definitely include the handwritten note - I would cherish that if a student gave me one :-)

What is a unique gift to give a third grade teacher for an end of the school year present?
Q. I have been a parent volunteer since my oldest started kindergarten in 1984 and have helped with numerous end of the school year parties. My youngest is in 3rd grade and I think my creativity has taken a leave of absence (or just too tired). I am just not coming up with any ideas for a teacher present this year. What are some good teacher gifts that you can think of? Some of the things I have done in the past are gift certificates to restaurants, teacher stores, sporting events, book stores; fabric painted sweatshirts, tote bags, aprons with kids' names and handprints; flowers, plants, and trees; one year I did a summer survival kit with sunscreen, a book, a sun hat, etc, in a styrafoam cooler. A. I am a teacher and by far the nicest suggestion is a book with notes from the kids. You have certainly given wonderful presents in the past too. But no one can ever give the gift of real appreciation. I have many mugs, t-shirts, plants etc but the gifts I treasure and that I take out when I need a lift are notes from my students and a well worn little book given to me by a class over 22 years ago. I love all my gifts and feel grateful that people have taken time to select and give a gift when we are all so busy so I am sure anything would be fine...but a little book of notes from the kids...a priceless jewel!

My employer gifted me an iPod Touch and then assessed a taxable gift value of $600. What do I do?
Q. The 16GB 2nd Generation iPod Touch retails from Apple for $299.00. It has never been higher. There are no service plans, or any additional costs, and the gift didn't come with any extras. How do I/Can I argue the difference in the value of the taxable gift assessment?
Asked by BankerManUSA - Thu Jul 2 03:10:39 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. No one doubts that the iPod was compensation. The question is how much--you say $299 at most, and your employer says $600. The first thing you need to do is double-check that at the time the iPod was given to you, it was retailing for $299 (or whatever). SAVE documentation of that fact. Once you're absolutely sure about the iPod's value, here is what you need to do: First, consider the fact that the employer will get a deduction in the amount of the iPod's value. Therefore, the employer will wrongly claim a $600 deduction with respect to the iPod, thereby decreasing the employer's taxable income. If done intentionally, overstating a deduction is a form of tax fraud potentially giving rise to a penalty in the amount of 75% of the… [cont.]

What are some great gift ideas to give parents of a newborn baby or a child?
Q. A bunch of my friends are starting to have kids now, so I want to give them a gift that is really useful and thoughtful. I usually fall back on either a bib, little baby clothes, onesies, or a gift certificate to Target. Is there anything more unique or more useful I can get the parents? Are there any customized gifts that are good? Since I don't have kids, I am clueless! Thanks!

A. Newborns - diapers diapers and more diapers. I know it's boring, but it is VERY useful. Diapers are expensive and babies go through a TON. They are also ok if you get the wrong size, because they are very easily exchangable with or without a receipt. Fantastic gift for toddlers - they have music CD's and books that you can order personalized with the children's name. Like my daughter (2 years old) has an Elmo CD that says "Come on Mia, let's play a game!" and she just LOVES it. She will listen to it over and over again... My oldest (five years old) has many books that are personalized with her name printed into the story and she just thinks that is cooler than snot. :) Also a really nice gift that I have been given in the past was… [cont.]

A. If you want to seem really thoughtful and supportive, get her a membership to a social club of her interest, or dance class or gym or toastmaster's, to help her make new friends and settle in to her new location. Or you could make contact with a local volunteer group and set her up to meet them (if she likes to volunteer). You could get her a really nice diary and schedule some suggested dates of activities in her new town, and write some nice wishes in it from everyone, and it will be a lovely and useful keepsake.

What type of gift do u give for an engagement party?
Q. My cousin just got engaged so her parents are having them an engagement party. The wedding isn't going to be for almost two years, and they don't live together yet, so I wonder what type of gift do you give or do you even have to take a gift? I've never been to an engagement party before.

A. It is not customary or required to give a gift to them. It's just an engagement party to celebrate not a gift giving event. you can bring something if you want but you don't have to.

What is the difference between a Deed of Gift and a Gift with Reservation?
Q. This question relates to UK Law:- I have an elderly widowed relative who has died in the last few months. He signed over his farm ten years ago to his son to avoid Inheritance Tax by signing a Deed of Gift. I have since been told that as the elderly relative remained living in the farmhouse rent free then this is a Gift with Reservation and not a Deed of Gift as the elderly gentleman retained a benefit from the property by living in it. My question is this:- does the fact the elderly gentleman remained rent free in the house make the Deed of Gift Void and if so then does disposal of all the assets (e.g. farm) revert back to the original Will. I would be most grateful for some help on this please.

A. As you rightly say, your elderly relative signed a 'Deed of Gift' to try to avoid paying inheritance tax. This works as a gift to another individual is exempt from inheritance tax AS LONG as the indivudal who makes the gift survives seven years. However this was a 'Gift with a Reservation of Benefit'. As such, if your elderly relative was still living in it at the time of death, it is treated as if it was still owned (s102(3) Finance Act 1986) by him but only for tax purposes. A gift with reservation of benefit has consequences for the amount of inheritance tax your elderly relative's estate will pay on the house, but NOT for the ownership of the house. The deed of gift is not void generally, only in relation to tax in an odd kind of… [cont.]

Q. I am having a baby shower next weekend. There will be about 10 people in attendance and I am trying to think of something small, sweet and inexpensive I can do for them to thank them for coming. I am planning on sending thank you cards, of course, but would also like to bring a small token gift for each person with me to the party. Thanks for your ideas!

A. I would get either the small lotions or soaps from a store like Bath & Body Works-- a nice gesture and only a few dollars apiece. You could even attach the soap to a loofah-- you can get 3 or 4 for $1 at some dollar stores.

How important is it for corporate gift to look fashionable and discreet?
Q. I have often been averse to bringing corporate gifts like notepads etc around outside of work because they can look cheap and gimmicky. To me I think it's important for any corporate gift to be thoughtfully designed, even if the gift came from a generic factory. What do you think?
Asked by Hi - Tue Sep 9 01:10:28 2008 - - 2 Answers - 1 Comments
A. If you want your gift to represent your company image/brand then select a product that does just that you don't have to spend a lot. If you have expensive taste then narrow your target and buy for your top clients. Or, consider tiering your gifts. Maybe spend $25 each on the most important clients, another tier @ $15 then maybe prospective clients $5.00 each. Believe it or not you can find a really nice laser engraved pen for $ 5.00 that looks like a $25 pen. Call www.promopeddler.com and explain what you would like to do, your budget and numbers. They'll help you design a gifting program just right for your branding needs in the marketplace.

Q. I have often been averse to bringing corporate gifts like notepads etc around outside of work because they can look cheap and gimmicky. To me I think it's important for any corporate gift to be thoughtfully designed, even if the gift came from a generic factory. What do you think?

A. If you want your gift to represent your company image/brand then select a product that does just that you don't have to spend a lot. If you have expensive taste then narrow your target and buy for your top clients. Or, consider tiering your gifts. How much money to put in gift certificate for tattoo?
Q. I want to give my boyfriend (of 10 months) a gift certificate for himself to go get a tattoo for his 22nd birthday. He already has several tattoos and talks about starting a sleeve on his arm. How much money should I put in the gift certificate? Or should I just make a homemade gift voucher stating that I will pay for his next tattoo at whatever place he chooses?

A. Definately do the homemade idea. Cash talks...and since a good portion of tattoo artists can be flaky its best to have it on hand and not a gift certificate that has already been paid for. Think about it. The artist has already been paid if you have a gift certificate...it would make much more sense to him to book someone when he can still make money. Sounds bad and I am sure all artists are different but its how it works most of the time. In regards to how much $$$ to give as a gift, it totally depends upon the tattoo. As little as $50-75 to cover a shop minimum...or A couple grand for sleeve. Figure $100-150 an hour for a good artist.
