A. As a jobseeker you don't really have anything to negotiate with. A company that wants to recruit at the lowest possible rate will be able to do so. If they don't pay enough to retain high quality staff, they will eventually suffer - but that can take years, or even decades. Agencies are more interested in how many people they place than in whether their placements are in good jobs they will stay with. The only thing you can do is to keep looking until you find something. And then, if it isn't good enough, continue looking.

What employment opportunities does a Biology degree open up?
Q. I'm planning to major in both Biology and Psychology, with hope of going to medical or grad school to study the nervous system. If I don't make it into grad school for whatever reason, what other employment opportunities would be available with these degrees?

A. I asked myself the same question, as I plan to enter med school after completing my bachelors as well. I couldn't find anything that interested me (or paid decently). I don't think a straight biology degree will make you very competitive in the job market (or a med school application for that matter). Anyways, I decided to get my major in biotechnology. You will get all of the required classes for medical school, be able to find a job after graduation of your bachelors, and I think be more competitive...

Are the employment prospects for the field of graphic design good?
Q. Does this area offer a steady and secure career? Or is it hard to find and keep employment in this area?
Asked by BarryBadrinath - Tue Apr 29 18:15:02 2008 - - 3 Answers - 2 Comments
A. I don't see any problems...remember graphic design doesn't HAVE to be localized to where you are living now (you didn't specify "this area"). I have clients all over the US/Canada (and occasionally some abroad). If is more important that YOU are good in the field. I am an Art Director for a TV station but I've had jobs in other fields...graphic design doesn't mean agency work - you can also work as an in-house designer. I've never not been able to find work. When I was unemployed I did freelance. I am finding the Hispanic market quite lucrative.

What is the minimum length of employment needed for eligibility of unemployment benefits?
Q. I've been working for a school district since January. I was given a layoff notice this week, and was wondering if I'm eligible for benefits even though I'll only have a total of 5 months of employment with this district. I've tried looking at the website for california's unemployment benefits program, but did not see anything about needing a minimum length of employment.
Asked by youblinkyoumiss - Wed May 13 21:37:38 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Hmm. There are distinctive eligibility requirements for school employees. There's charts and additional information at the DoL site below which might be of help: Of course you can always apply for benefits. If you are eligible, you will get them, and if not, you will be denied. There is no penalty for applyng if you are not eligible, as long as your application information is truthful.

Temporary work through employment agencies. What are the consequences of leaving the agency for the employer?
Q. I have temporary work through an employment agency. There is a possibility that the company have permanent positions but I have been told that the agency will charge the company if I start to work for them directly. Does any anyone know the rules around this?

A. If the company hired you through the temp agency, they know what the rules and ramifications are for hiring you as a regular employee. If they offer you the job, take it and let them deal with the employment agency. The agency is just protecting themselves from losing the revenue they get by having you work through their agency. Companies pay temp agencies for the employees that are hired as long as they are in temporary status. And, this is much cheaper than paying for all of your benefits as a regular employee. It's also a lot easier for them to dismiss you for any reason if either you don't work out or they just don't have the work for you any more. If they feel that they want you on as a regular employee, they can then invest that… [cont.]

What is the general level of employment that is below waiting tables?
Q. Isn't there a single level of employment that includes such positions as busing, dish washing, sweeping parking lots, etc. I thought I heard it referred to as general utility work but I'm not sure enough to put it on an application and I am really searching for a job but probably don't have enough formal employment experience to land a job waiting tables. Thanks.
Asked by delectable - Fri Jul 11 21:24:53 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Some people go directly to waiting tables; it's in how you present yourself, your appearance, speech etc. You are asking a restaurant to let you be their representative to their customers, so you need to look neat, speak clearly and be friendly. Saying you have other experience may help, since you know something about how a restaurant works.

Can I cancel an employment visa in UAE which shows a different profession that I'm applying w/ no penalties?
Q. I applied as a staff nurse in UAE but in my employment visa my profession that was written is receptionist/PATIENT. I feel that this is not right, it should be as a nurse. Can I have this employment visa cancelled so I can take another employment visa with a different employer.
Asked by andrew m - Sat Sep 15 21:24:07 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. As per the UAE visa regulations an employ cannot be able to cancel the work visa issued on his/her name. Only the employer/sponsor can able to do this. In your case, if you are not interested to join with the current offer just inform them and go for the other offer. But bear in mind that your new visa application will not be approved till the existing visa has not been cancelled. I would suggest you to stick with the current offer and you can able to change/ revise your profession according to your designation in due course with your supporting certificates.

A. It depends on your field of work. For example my friend is a lawyer and he was hired through recruiters and video conferencing by one of the top tier firms. It really just depends on the position that you are applying for. It's rare to be hired without a face to face interview. You would not be able to arrange a flat to rent if you are not in Sydney. Most real estate agents will not rent you a flat sight unseen, plus you need to sign documents and show evidence from your employer as to wages etc. Unless you put an ad on and see what you come up with - most flatmates would want to meet you first. Hey-- don't knock it. You will be out there communicating with people the product you are selling.

How do I find out my employment history with a closed down resteraunt?

Asked by carly h - Mon Jul 20 17:08:40 2009 - - 4 Answers - 1 Comments
A. Hello Carly: Your best bet is to use your old W-2's (from your tax returns) to piece together the dates. Approximate dates (month & year) are okay for prospective employers. They won't be able to verify with anyone at Bennigan's anyway, since they're out of business. If it was more than 3 years ago, your references aren't going to include any of those people either, unless you still work with some of those people at other places, since leaving Bennigans. Also, the Social Security administration would have the dates of Bennigan's contributions to your SS accounts. You can request a copy of the contributions report from Social Security under the social security number used for those earnings. Good luck in your search.

A. Usually via your credit history. Every time you fill out a credit app you are asked where you work. That data goes on your credit history.

What are some good alternatives to finding employment?
Q. I just moved to an area where there aren't a lot of jobs (no surprises in this economy). Do you have any suggestions for creative ways to seek employment?

A. In today's economy people are not willing to hire, but that does not mean that every business is at a loss. Without knowing your age or location it is hard to give you perfect advice but in general if you are willing to spend some money to start your own business, a franchise is always the best decision during a recession. Decent food for reasonable prices, plus minimum wage workers and a guaranteed supplier can not be beat. A friend of mine owns a burger king, kfc, and soon checkers and he is doing great. You only need a charter from the company and a solid business plan. If you dont have the capital to start your own business there is always the option of working from a home office or pc. Become a day trader online or branch out and… [cont.]

How long does it take to get employment visa?
Q. I signed an offer with a premium hotel in Dubai & they are applying the employment visa, on my behalf. How long does it take generally & maximum how much time it can take?My present company needs a month notice period, to get a release letter. Will it be wise to put down the papers after I receive the visa?Or putting down the papers right now is advisable?

A. To issue an employment entry permit to the UAE usually takes 2-3 weeks if all docs are in order. When you should resign from your current job, depends on the date you are suppose to start your new position. Do you still have any leave days left? If yes, don't forget to deduct the same of the 30 days notice.
