Will a dog get sick from eating wet food if he only eats dry food?
Q. My dog only eats dry dog food, but I thought he might like it if he had some wet food today, but my dad said it might make him sick as he only eats dry food. I don't want to switch I just wanted to give him a little bit of it.

A. Try mixing it with dry food. That way he will have less chances of getting sick, since he'll be eating part wet and part dry food. Also, you'll save more money that way, then giving him mostly wet food, since wet food is more expensive than dry(you get less pounds/amounts for the same price as dry food).I did that with my babies(my lovely "kitties") and that had more taste than dry food alone, and they also get fuller/satisfy their hunger faster. They love it.Too much of the same thing can make them sick, especially dry food because it haves too much preservatives and other things like sodium, fat.cholesterol,et c.There's nothing better than natural food.

My dog refuses to eat wet food, and eats only dry food...is that weird?
Q. I know I shouldn't be complaining, but I find it really weird since most dogs i know will kill to have wet food. I have a 4 months old papillon, and he loves his canidae, but i bought a can of innova wet puppy food and mixed a little with his food and he absolutely refused to touch it. Even with treats, he refuses to eat Wellness lines since its those soft and chewy ones. Are anyone else's dogs like that? Or is this just an abnormal "personal preference?" =)

A. personal preferance. Dry food is cheaper, and its all we feed our dogs. Don't freak, its normal.

My cat gets diahrea when she eats wet food-is there some kind of healthy wet food I can give her?
Q. I'm trying to figure out a healthier diet for my two female cats (1 year olds.) I've been researching and I see that wet food can be healthier for cats and helps prevent future health complications. One of my cats gets diahrea everytime I've given her wet food, and I don't even give her much. I've used brands such as 9 lives and Fancy Feast. Any suggestions for healthy wet food that shouldn't give her diahrea? Thanks

A. Good for you for looking into an appropriate diet for your cats! I recommend varying the diet with a constant rotation of accepted canned foods that your cat enjoys. If you do this, and allow your cat the same assortment they would have in nature when eating mice, bugs, birds and rabbits, your cats digestive system won't be so sensitive and you won't have to run around looking for a specific brand when your store is out. You will have a nice variety to choose from instead. Canned foods I recommend for your rotation: Nature's Variety - Wellness Grain Free Formula s - By Nature Organics - Organix - Evanger's Holistic Pheasant - Evanger's Organic Braised Chicken - Evanger's Turkey & Butternut Squash - PetGuard… [cont.]

My dog eats the cats wet food and my cat eats the dogs wet food. Is there a major diff. between the two foods?
Q. I guess what I'm asking is the nutritional difference between the two kinds of foods. I can't really imagine that it is hurting them any, but before I buy just dog food and give to both the cat and dog, I wanted to know.

A. There are quite a few differences...the difference in protein and things like that. My boss is a vet and says it is alright for a cat to eat dogs food but NOT okay for the dog to eat the cats food. Just to be safe I would try feeding them in seperate rooms, taking the food up when they aren't eating and not let them share...sorry

How can I get my kitten to eat wet food?
Q. My kitten is almost a year old and I want him to start eating wet food (fancy feast, friskies, etc). He eats dry kitten food, but if I put some wet food in a bowl he smells it and never eats it. How can I teach him to start eating wet food?

A. I would not stress about it some cats like wet food and some don't every cat is diffrent just like we are. And also dry food is better for their teeth. If you are worried that he is not getting enough vitamins. There are plenty of dry foods out there that have awesome nutrition. Such as Science Diet.

How can I get my cat to eat wet food?
Q. I try to feed my cat wet food twice a day. He won't eat it when I give it to him at feeding time, he only eats it when I leave it out for about a day. I've tried mixing it with his dry food, as I'm switching him from dry to wet. Still nothing. Sarah: No offense, but have you ever heard of Google? If you have, I want you to email me some evidence supporting your opinion.

A. Read the catinfo.org link Ken gave you. Pay no attention to people who tell you to feed your cats dry food. It is unnatural and linked to several health issues in cats. Here is a link on the dry food/teeth question:

A. Right now your dog is still young, so it is ok for now to give him the wet dog food. As he gets older, try weaning him of the wet food. At first, you can give 2 parts wet dog food with 1 part dry dog food. Every few days increase the amount of dry dog food and decrease the Within about a week he should be completely on the dry dog food. Some dogs can be stubborn, so you just have to be persistent and patient with him. They are smart and will test you by not eating the dry dog food, but be persistent and keep giving him the dry dog food. He will be ok, even if he does not eat for a couple of days, but when he gets hungry enough he will eat the dry dog food. As long as he's drinking water, he will be ok. (BEST ANSWER) Why do some cats get the runs from eating wet food?
Q. I have a three month kitten, who eats dry food, but whenever she sees wet food, she goes crazy for it! We don't feed her a lot of it, only parts of a sachet or something and she gets the runs. Is wet food bad for some kittens? I feel bad not letting her have some, some days she doesn't eat much dry food, so I add a little wet food and she eats it all. Thanks. Best answer goes to the person who responds with the most details/information/exper ience! Thanks everyone.

A. OK this is why she enjoys wet food so much. Cats do not have a thirst drive like humans or dogs thus they receive the majority of their water from the food they eat, that's why wet food is better for them. When a cat is fed primarily a dry food diet they are often chronically dehydrated due to the low thirst drive and are at a higher risk of developing diabetes due to dry being much higher in carbohydrate then protein and fat, which is what a cat primarily requires for their energy source. The reason that your cat experiences the runs is because you have added a sudden shift in diet rather then a gradual one which wouldn't cause any problem what so ever. My recommendation to you would to be shift your cat to a primarily wet food diet to… [cont.]

my cat always eats the leftovers of my dogs nutro max rice chicken & lamb wet food...?
Q. he's real picky and he can only eat wet food because of digestive problems. he will only eat the same kind twice and then he doesn't like it so i have to constantly buy different flavors/brands (it doesn't upset his stomach and my vet said whatever gets him to eat is fine ). i always find him eating what my dog hasn't and he never seems to get sick of it should i just feed him this?

A. Most likely he wont eat it if you feed it directly to him. My youngest cat "Monster" is the same way, kinda. I will fix him his dinner (mixed wet and dry) and he will refuse to eat it unless he thinks someone else is going to get it. (When my two males are done eating they will always leave half or all of their food so I scrape it all onto one plate and give it to the outside cats- ferral). If he sees me do this he will insist on going outside and then he will eat it. Remember this is what he turned his nose up to just 1/2 hour before. Let your kitty think it is getting by with something or try getting the kitty lamb and rice. It cant hurt.

A. Canned food is much better for her than dry (dry food is dehydrating, and isn't good for their kidneys, which is very important at her age). But I'd be concerned with her teeth. When a cat suddenly refuses to eat dry food, it often means a painful mouth and teeth. That needs to be addressed by the vet - the same as we'd go to the dentist if our teeth hurt.

A. Hi there, Siamese cats tend to develop "pouches" actually, as far as my experience teaches me. If your cat has recently put on weight and your feeding schedule and amount has not changed, this is a good reason to take your kitty to the vet to rule out any medical condition that may be causing the problem. As far as caloric intake requirements, depending your kitty's bone structure and what type Siamese he is, ( the apple headed variety vs the modern more svelt sleeker Siamese) will determine how many calories he will need a day to prevent obesity. This is an excellent article that is quite technical but does give information about caloric requirements. We feed Wellness brand to our cats. We give them 6 oz of food daily, ( two 3 oz… [cont.]

Is the swiffer wet jet liquid that you clean the floor with poisonous to your dog? If he eats something off ?
Q. the floor (after the swiffer stuff is dry) can he be being poisoned? Well, I don't think it's an urban legend because even the package of swiffer wet says to keep pets away from it. But I am thinking that's to make sure they don't drink up a whole bottle.

A. In that case, I would have six dead dogs - dachshunds yet, low to the ground. To answer you directly, NO, it is not true. I Swifter my floors a lot and none of my dogs ever got so much as nauseous eating something off the floor. I am not recommending you let the dog lick the floor all day, but Swifter is certainly not poisonous.

Is it bad that my 6 month old kitten suddenly won't eat wet food?
Q. So, I feed my kitten Purina One Kitten dry food, and various types of kitten wet food, and she never really ate much wet food, but now she won't even touch it! I'm worried because I've heard harm can come to cats that only eat dry food. I'm wondering how true this is, and also how could I get her to eat wet food!

A. Id try the pedigree first, if she doesn't touch it, then try the tastey purina one. You want to start mixing half of what you give her in wet, with a scoop or dry. And mix it together. Get her used to that... Then gradually lower the soft food untill she's only eating hard. It's pretty easy. You just don't want to change their diet all together overnight. She needs to get used to it first. So mix it with wet, then go to pure dry.

Does anyone know how to get a Cat/Kitten to eat wet food?
Q. Well, my kitten has never really eaten wet food much, but then at around 6 months she wouldn't even touch wet food anymore, and I don't think it's very healthy for her to just eat dry food, but she just refuses to eat wet food!!! It's so frustrating!!! Does anyone know how to get a cat to eat wet food?

A. Canned food is best, as dry food was created for our convenience and not for the health of our cats. Dry food is now linked to such feline disorders as obesity, diabetes, constipation, urinary tract disorders and kidney disease. You are wise to want your kitten to eat wet food, as most vets (at least those who've bothered to continue their education, and those vets who are just out of school and up to date with the latest research) recommend at least one canned meal a day. Mine is pretty extreme and suggests canned only. Still, convincing the cat that canned is best can take some doing. Cats react to different textures and flavors in foods. Some are flaked, some pate, some are chunks and soupy. Try a variety, give her a few… [cont.]
