Africa is the world's second-largest and second most-populous continent, after Asia. At about 30.2 million km² (11.7 million sq mi) including adjacent islands, it covers 6% of the Earth's total surface area and 20.4% of the total land area. With a billion people (as of 2009, see table) in 61 territories, it accounts for about 14.72% of the world's human population.

The continent is surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea to the north, both the Suez Canal and the Red Sea along the Sinai Peninsula to the northeast, the Indian Ocean to the southeast, and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. The continent has 54 sovereign states, including Madagascar, various island groups, and the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, a member state of the African Union whose statehood is disputed by Morocco.

Africa, particularly central eastern Africa, is widely regarded within the scientific community to be the origin of humans and the Hominidae clade (great apes), as evidenced by the discovery of the earliest hominids and their ancestors, as well as later ones that have been dated to around seven million years ago – including Sahelanthropus tchadensis, Australopithecus africanus, A. afarensis, Homo erectus, H. habilis and H. ergaster – with the earliest Homo sapiens (modern human) found in Ethiopia being dated to circa 200,000 years ago.

Africa straddles the equator and encompasses numerous climate areas; it is the only continent to stretch from the northern temperate to southern temperate zones.

What country in africa is the worst when it comes to conflict diamonds currently?
Q. Is it correct Sierra Leone is at peace? What area in Africa has the worst conflict diamond problem going on now?

A. Liberia, because the diamonds are smuggled in then sold as "legit" and "non-conflict." In short, don't buy diamonds you are killing babies no matter what the stamp of aproval says.

How do I obtain more information on Africa's agriculture?
Q. Hi, I am doing research for a company on Africa. In particular, research on the poorer communities: the type of soil they have, what type of fertilizer is available to Africans, what can be grown and planted in Africa? I thought if anyone could help with these questions, that Yahoo Answers could. If you cannot answer my questions, could you direct me to someone who could?

A. Seven years of my life I have worked in West-Africa (French speaking countries) as an tropical agronomist. For your search i would like to advice you to have a look over here: and: Africa is huge and the differences between countries are enormous. So agriculture differs from region to region. Hope this helps.

How is Africa trying to stop the Somalian Pirates?
Q. Whats with only NATO stopping the pirates. I have done major reasearch on the current event on pirates and have not found any articles about Africa helping. If anyone finds any articles about Africa helping or not helping enough please leave the articles web address.

A. Kenya is providing the venue for prosecuting the pirates. Looking at a map of Somalia, the country is practically all coastline. There aren't really any African nations near it. Kenya and Eritrea, but their navies are quite small, mostly consisting of patrol boats. Ethiopia has no coast. Djibouti has its own issues, but provides bases for the US and other countries. That's pretty much it. The European countries and the US have economic interests, such as owning the tankers and ships sailing though the area.
