Ageism refers to the stereotyping of and discrimination against individuals or groups because of their age. It is a set of beliefs, attitudes, norms, and values used to justify age based prejudice and discrimination. This may be casual or systematic. The term was coined in 1969 by US gerontologist Robert N. Butler to describe discrimination against seniors, and patterned on sexism and racism. Butler defined ageism as a combination of three connected elements. Among them were prejudicial attitudes towards older people, old age, and the aging process; discriminatory practices against older people; and institutional practices and policies that perpetuate stereotypes about older people The term has also been used to describe prejudice and discrimination against teens and children, including ignoring their ideas because they are too young, or assuming that they should behave in certain ways because of their age. Ageism commonly refers to negative discriminatory practices, regardless of the age towards which it is applied. There are several subsidiary forms of ageism. Adultism is a predisposition towards adults, which is seen as biased against children, youth, and all young people who are not addressed or viewed as adults. Jeunism is the discrimination against older people in favor of younger ones. This includes political candidacies, commercial functions, and cultural settings where the supposed greater vitality and/or physical beauty of youth is more appreciated than the supposed greater moral and/or intellectual rigor of adulthood. Adultcentricism is the "exaggerated egocentrism of adults." Adultocracy is the social convention which defines "maturity" and "immaturity," placing adults in a dominant position over young people, both theoretically and practically. Gerontocracy is a form of oligarchical rule in which an entity is ruled by leaders who are significantly older than most of the adult population. Chronocentrism is primarily the belief that a certain state of humanity is superior to all previous and/or future times. Ageism may also lead to the development of fears towards certain age groups, particularly: Pedophobia, the fear of infants and children; Ephebiphobia, the fear of youth, sometimes also referred as an irrational fear of adolescents or a prejudice against teenagers; and Gerontophobia, the fear of elderly people. GNU Free Documentation License How many know of a senior citizen who has experienced age discrimination? Q. I, only months ago, experienced age discrimination by a large retailer. The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) has adopted specific guidelines to protect employees and job applicants against age discrimination. "Age" discrmination is in the company of other criteria which, if used in whole or part to make a decision to reject an applicant from a job and/or promotion, (race, creed, national origin, color, sexual orientation, gender, health, and/or appearance) are grounds for filing complaints with the EEOC. I believe my case is not unique. I am soon to be 65; in excellent mental and physical health. I say this because many jobs require lifting up to predetermined weights and other physical criteria such as climbing ladders, [cont.] Asked by Arnie Sherr - Thu May 24 20:18:44 2007 - - 1 Answers - 1 Comments A. Well, I'm certainly not 65 years old, but I filed against my former place of employment last year on a number of grounds including the Age Discrimination Act. My position was replaced with a young woman close to 20 years younger than I and basically eye candy. I would love to see them prove this 23 year old has more experience than a 41 year old with over 15 years of experience. I wouldn't eliminate filing with the EEOC. Everyone told me I didn't have a chance in hell. Even my attorney initially tried to talk me out of pursuing legal action and accept the severance agreeement. Guess what? EEOC took my case. Booya! Answered by redvelvetflames4ever - Thu May 24 20:27:35 2007 Would this legally be considered age discrimination? Q. I have a good friend who has been working for the same company about two years now. He started shortly before turning seventeen and is turning nineteen this year. He works at a retail store as a sales associate. A member of management has to temporarily leave during a busy time of the year and higher management positions are looking into adding an additional manager to cover while they are not present. When expressing his interest in the position, he was verbally told by his manager that he was too young. Would this technically be considered age discrimination? If so, what should he do to resolve this? Asked by . - Thu Jun 18 21:45:42 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. Under the Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967 (ADEA), it is unlawful to discriminate against a person because of his/her age with respect to any term, condition, or privilege of employment, including hiring, firing, promotion, layoff, compensation, benefits, job assignments, and training. It is however, lawful to have a certain age requirement if age is an occupational qualification; other reasonable factors; laws of foreign workplace; seniority system; employee benefit plans. So in the case of your friend, he doesn't have enough legal cause. Answered by unknown - Thu Jun 18 21:58:06 2009 Is a senior citizen discount age discrimination?
Q. I don't want to hear any crapola about poor seniors on a fixed income. I'm talking about legality and ethics. It gives discounts to people based on age. Asked by Jabber Jaw - Wed Jun 24 17:42:47 2009 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. Yes it is. However, like MOST discrimination, it is perfectly legal. The only areas in which discrimination based on age is NOT legal is discriminating against people over 40 in employment, and certain types of housing discrimination. When a 19 year old hotty says she doesn't date guys over 30, that's also discrimination - but it's also legal.
